OBJECTIVES: to compare the prevalence of bullying between children ages 11-14
years that visited the departments of Mental Health Services for Children and
Adolescents (MHSCA) in Cyprus; with those of a previous research on a
representative sample of the general student population of the same age range,
to report involving emotional difficulties and behavioral problems, to
investigate the occurrence rate of PTSD in victims, to collect data involving
children beliefs, reactions of school staff and relatives, schoolmates, age and
gender and to correlate them with bullying.
METHOD: Participants were 200 children and their parents who visited MHSCA. The
diagnostic tools were: The Revised Olweus Bully / Victim Questionnaire (for
students)/Pro-Victim Scale, Strength and Difficulty Questionnaires: For parents
and children, CPTSD-RI και ASEBA questionnaires (YSR, CBCL).
RESULTS: The clinical population of children from 11 to 14 years, have been
victimized twice the rate of the general population of the same age. The groups
of children involved in bullying phenomena, had significantly more emotional
difficulties and behavioral problems than the not involved group, (65%) of
victims suffer from moderate to severe PTSD, girls demonstrate more frequent
PTSD than boys , boys bully more than girls, socially isolated children are
prone to victimization etc.
CONCLUSION: Bullying in schools is a burden on the vulnerable mental health
population.
