Summary:
The purpose of the study is to examine the value of FDG PET / CT in initiating
treatment in patients with sarcoidosis. 30 treatment-naive patients, diagnosed
with sarcoidosis according to the ATS / ERS / WASOG criteria, participated in
the study. They underwent extensive biochemical testing, PFTs and a FDG PET /
CT study. Imaging was performed according to the EANM guidelines. We studied
the display of the reticuloendothelial system. The only biochemical marker
associated with two variables of the spleen imaging, splenic-SUVavg and
spleen-SUVmax, was the levels of soluble interleukin 2 receptor. Regarding the
visualization of bone and marrow, levels of spleen SUV max and the medullary
SUV max were found to be statistically correlated. Additionally, the levels of
sIL-2R were significantly higher in patients with positive bone lesions in PET.
No statistical correlation was noted between bone and splenic imaging and other
biomarkers. We believe that patients with active sarcoidosis show a generalized
reaction of the RES. Activation of the RES in sarcoidosis is connected between
the different systems and organs through the functional imaging of FDG / PET,
which is recognized as a biomarker of disease activity and is related to other
prognostic biomarkers.
