Summary:
The genus Nepeta L. belongs to the Labiatae (Lamiaceae) family and comprises
species with aromatic properties, rich in essential oils. Many Nepeta species
have been widely used since the Middle Ages due to their pharmacological
activity. They are known for their remarkable biological activity against
various pests, while lately they are being used in garden architecture.
The aim of the present PhD thesis was the evaluation of essential oils of the
taxa of Nepeta argolica Bory & Chaub. group as possible chemotaxonomic tools,
the isolation and structure elucidation of metabolites from the organic extract
of Nepeta parnassica Heldr. & Sart., as well as the evaluation of the insect
repellent and insecticidal activity of the essential oil, extract and selected
secondary metabolites of N. parnassica.
Eleven taxa of the genus Nepeta were collected, nine of which belong to the
group of N. argolica (sectio Pycnonepeta), while the other two were N.
leucostegia (sectio Pycnonepeta) and N. nuda subsp. nuda (sectio Nepeta).
Following hydrodistillation of the plants, the chemical composition of the
essential oils was studied with gas chromatography (GC-FID, GC-MS) and the data
were subjected to statistical analyses (Cluster Analysis, Paired t-test).
In addition, the crude extracts of N. parnassica were subjected to
chromatographic separations to yield twenty-eight secondary metabolites that
were identified on the basis of their spectroscopic data. Nine out of the
twenty-eight compounds are new natural products. One of them is a nepetalactone
dimer (14), the other is a nepetalactone derivative (16) and the third is a
pimarane diterpene (17). The six new natural products 23-28 belong to the class
of fatty acids.
The essential oil, crude extract and selected secondary metabolites were
evaluated for their repellent and insecticidal activity against mosquitoes and
ants. Larvicidal and repellent activity evaluation was performed against the
mosquito species Culex pipiens biotype molestus and Aedes cretinus, while
insecticidal activity was tested against ants of the species Leptothorax sp.
Finally, the essential oil of the plant N. parnassica was tested for its acute
toxicity against rats.
