OBJECTIVE
Comprehension of the indications and the contraindications of carotid
angioplasty. The use of cerebral protection devices has broadened the initial
indications and the risk of major complications has been reduced.
MATERIAL & METHODS
Review of the international literature on carotid disease, endovascular
treatment indications, the use and effectiveness of cerebral protection devices.
RESULTS/ CONCLUSIONS
The endovascular treatment of carotid disease is another weapon in our arsenal,
as long as its use is dictated by the international indications. The risk of
cerebral embolization during carotid angioplasty, the Achilles' heel of the
method, is minimized with the use of cerebral protection devices.
