Dietary habits and impacts on childhood. The role of the school.
Summary:
Proper and balanced diet is a prerequisite for the proper mental, spiritual,
physical and mental development of children, especially at school age, when the
child's eating habits are influenced by many factors. Ensuring a healthy,
adequate and safe nutrition during the first years of life can contribute to
achieving maximum levels of physical and mental development.
Nutrition is very important in early life. Specifically, a healthy diet during
childhood is associated with a reduced risk of developing immediate health
problems such as obesity, iron deficiency anemia and tooth decay. Nowadays, it
is known that the diet followed during childhood and adolescence affects health
in the long term and the effects manifest in adulthood. Therefore, a healthy
diet during this period lays the foundation for longevity and the prevention of
chronic diseases of adulthood, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and
osteoporosis.
Nutrition habits and the overall way of living and behaving are formed and
established in childhood. This includes also the regular physical activity
habit which has a proven importance for health. Moreover, school and teachers
play an important role for the child to formulate proper nutritional awareness
and adopt good dietary habits. However, it has been observed that children tend
to adopt unhealthy nutrition habits which lead to subsequent booming rise of
health problems, such as childhood obesity, which is directly related to
nutrition and reduced physical activity, and this was the motivation for
writing of this paper.
