Summary:
Purpose: The bibliographic analysis of the utility of MRI breast as additional
breast screening method to be performed under specific indications and
specifications. By using magnetic resonance and special coils and sequences
before and after intravenous contrast administration, the method is widely used
in order to exclude possible malignancy and characterize morphological and
pharmacokinetic suspicious breast lesions. It is also used for the performance
of interventional techniques under magnetic guidance with the use of special
equipment compatible with the magnetic field. The most widely used techniques
are minimally invasive ones, like biopsy, aspiration and detection of
suspicious lesions.
Methods: Literature review of the technique of the breast MRI, the screening
protocols and the diagnostic criteria is obtained in order to categorize breast
lesions in benign and malignant according to the international system BI-RADS.
Depending on their morphological characteristics, the lesions are distinguished
primarily on the basis of their shape and their margins and then a further
evaluation takes place according to their enhancement after the injection of
the contrast agent, while kinetic curves with specific dynamics for each lesion
are provided. The most frequent benign and malignant lesions of the breast are
described according to their imaging and clinical characteristics and a general
histological report is introduced for each one. Finally, the analysis of the
breast MR findings in each case is presented. A brief description of MRI
findings in patients with breast implants and in male patients and a
description of the interventional techniques under the guidance of magnetic
resonance and the appropriate equipment are made and completed by literature
results.
Results: Bibliographically statistical data of the imaging of the breast
lesions are given and literature results of the specialty and the sensitivity
of breast MRI and the interventional techniques guided by this method are
presented.
