Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of a Psycho-educational Program for Adolescents with Crohn’s/Ulcerative Colitis: a randomized control pilot study.
Summary:
Background : The aim of this study is to assess the acceptability of a
multi-component program through qualitative analysis and to investigate
whether it affects stress, depressive symptoms, physical activity and quality
of life of adolescents with Crohn’s/Ulcerative Colitis. Methods: 6 adolescents
with Ulcerative Colitis and 10 with Crohn’s disease were randomized separately
to either an intervention or a control group. Intervention consisted of 6
weekly sessions and included promotion of healthy life style (sleep hygiene,
Mediterranean diet, moderate exercise), education in stress management
techniques and promotion of positive thinking. The socio-demographics, the
depression, the stress score, the health score and the quality of life were
assessed at baseline and after finishing the program. Additionally parents and
adolescents of the study group were asked to write down their opinion about the
program. Both groups received standard medical care during the study period.
Results: In the intervention group there is a strong improvement in CDI score
and increase in the physical activity compared with the control group.
Adolescents found the program helpful with an educative and cognitive
component. Parents wanted to participate more actively in this program.
Conclusions: multi component programs should be included as routine in cases of
adolescents with Crohn’s/Ulcerative Colitis as a more integrated approach.
Family should participate actively in these programs .
