Relaxation Techniques in low back pain patients- a randomized trial
Summary:
Low back pain is a common problem affecting 11% of the population in Greece.
Pain lasts up to 6 weeks, affecting patient’s functional ability and quality of
life. Αpart from mechanical causes, low back pain is associated with stress and
psychological factors. Therefore, treatment also consists of alternative
methods, such as relaxation techniques. In this present study, the techniques
used by the patients, were diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscular
relaxation, autogenic training and guided imagery.
The patients were randomized. 31 patients were analyzed in the treatment group
and 33 in the control group. Treatment group followed an 8 week relaxation
program with weekly sessions and everyday practicing the techniques by
listening to the CD at home (twice a day). Results were analyzed. No
statistically significant difference was found, regarding PSS scoring, BMI and
satisfaction from functional ability. But there was a statistically significant
difference in BPI (pain) measurements, and HLC measurements. There was also a
statistically significant decrease in all 3 cortisol measurements, in treatment
group. In conclusion, these techniques have good results in pain reduction and
lowering cortisol levels, therefore should be incorporated in rehabilitation
protocols.
