Summary:
• Aim: The aim of the current study was to compare the effect of LLLT
using Nd:YAG and Diode Laser on periodontal ligament cells proliferation,
differentiation and collagen production.
• Materials and methods: After the human biopsy of periodontal tissue a
primary cell culture of periodontal ligament cells (PDL) has been established.
Then, 10000 cells/cm² were counded by microscope and seeded into 12-well
plates, 1ml/well. Afterwards, immediately followed the laser irradiation with
Nd:YAG and Diode laser with energy densities for 2, 4, 6, and 12 J/cm2. The
effect of irradiation on these cultured primary cell lines has been evaluated
with colorimetric assays after 24h, 48h, 72h. As controls non irradiated cells
at the same end points have been used.
• Results: An increased proliferation in the irradiated cultures
compared to nonirradiated controls was noticed while a superiority of Nd: YAG
was found when compared Diode. Any statistical significant difference in
collagen and alkaline phosphatase production was not detected for both among
the applied wavenlengths nor for controls.
• Conclusions: Therefore, irradiation navigated periodontal ligament
cells mainly towards proliferation than to differentiation or collagen
production.
