Summary:
This study evaluates the current biology textbook, four year after its
introduction in Greek high schools. The focus is, in particular, on the
“Biology 3d grade” textbook written by Mavrikaki, Gouvra, Kabouri and issued by
the Textbook Publishing Organization (Greece).
The study uses qualitative research tools and is based on in-depth interviews
of eight high school teachers with experience in biology teaching. The textbook
is evaluated in terms of organization and structure, form, language and
readability, content, methodology and degree of understanding.
In general, the organization and structure of the textbook has been found
satisfactory. In terms of external characteristics and aesthetics, the comments
were very positive, with few comments for improvement of the cover page.
Nevertheless, most interviewers are not satisfied by the readability of the
book. Even though the language and the explanation of various meanings have
been found very good, they are considered to be difficult for the level of the
students.
