Summary:
Ιt is known that Santorini and the Stromboli volcanoes are two volcanic islands
of
particular interest in volcanology and tourism. In this master thesis is an
attempt to identify
the volcanic hazards on the island of Santorini in comparison with the island
of Stromboli
and especially for the actions of Civil Protection.
Originally made some general references to volcanoes and volcanic activity and
their risks and then generally reported the definitions of risk and
vulnerability, and the role
of Civil Protection.
Then there was a comparison between the Organization of Civil Protection in
Greece in general, as there are no actions taken for the volcanic hazard
forecasting in
Greece, and one specifically for volcanic hazard forecasting and organization
of the civil
protection in Italy and specifically on the island of Stromboli.
On the island of Santorini all the necessary information from various sources
were
digitized to create thematic maps. However, on the island of Stromboli in this
diploma
thesis was not possible to make something similar, but was an attempt to
approach this
situation in general, by information from both the Internet and information
from the Civil
Protection headquarters in Rome and the Institute of Volcanology INGV in Naples.
Reference is also made to the historical and geological evolution of both the
volcanic islands of Stromboli and Santorini where some similarities are
identified.
Also analytical approach is carried out on population and land uses for the
island of
Santorini and reporting information relevant to the island of Stromboli.
Identification of relevant monitoring networks of the two volcanoes is made. The
island of Santorini is characterized by the proliferation of various
organizations and
universities and hypo function of monitoring networks.
In an effort to determine the volcanic activity on the island of Santorini two
trips
were made. One took place in 2008 and measured concentrations of gases in the
region of
Kameni and 2010 soil temperatures were recorded in a depth of 60 cm, from both
the site
of Kameni and throughout the island of Santorini.
Also water samples from wells and warm springs were taken.Similarly for the
determination of volcanic activity on the island of Stromboli
valuable assistance and information source were the Civil Protection
headquarters in Rome
and the Institute of Volcanology in Naples. There valuable information was
collected on
both the volcanic activity of Stromboli in recent years and the operations and
organization
of Civil Protection to safeguard citizens and tourists on the island.
Completing, an attempt was made to determine threatened areas through thematic
maps on the island of Santorini and suggestions were made regarding the
operation and
organization of Civil Protection in Greece. Finally three possible scenarios of
explosive
activity on the island were synthesized and suggestions were made on the
measures to be
taken by the state for the protection and safe transportation of the existing
population on
the island
