Nisyros volcano: volcanic risk management and Risk
Summary:
In this paper we examine the characteristics of the volcano of Nisyros and
particularly the degree of risk that characterizes it.
Nisyros is an active volcano which belongs to the volcanic arc of the southern
Aegean and includes volcanic centers Sousaki Corinth, Methana, Poros, Aegina,
Kimolos Milos, Santorini and ends in Nisyros and Kos. H creation of these
volcanoes thought to be due to the subduction of the African lithospheric plate
in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea under the Aegean microplate.
In the volcano volcanic activity continued for several thousand years by
forming successive bursts its current form stromatoifaisteiou. This has formed
an impressive caldera about 4 km where the largest hydrothermal crater located
in the world, Stefanos with 300 meters diameter.
Today metaifaisteiaki activity continues in the form of fumaroles occurring
within the hydrothermal craters and hot springs with temperatures from 30 to 60
degrees are located in various locations of the island.
From data of volcanic gas analyzes created special hazard maps and distribution
of gases in the environment and become correlation effort with other volcanic
centers of the southern Aegean and the wider area of the Mediterranean.
Addition will make proposals on the management of volcanic risk associated with
the gaseous phases that affect humans and the environment. Furthermore it will
be correlated with other categories such as pyroclastic flows and landslides
phenomena developed in various areas of the volcano
