Summary:
The mobile telecommunications market is dominated by mobile network operators
(MNOs), who have bought the necessary spectrum and provide mobile
products and services. An alternative solution is the mobile virtual network
operators (MVNOs) who have their own mobile services and try to consolidate
their position and increase their market share.
There are various classifications and business models of mobile virtual network
operators. In the first case they can be distinguished by the degree of
independence / penetration they have in the mobile value chain, so we can have
from a company that simply lends its own brand name (Reseller), up to the one
that has all the necessary
back office structure as well as its own network components in the core network
(Full MVNO). Another categorization has to do with the area in which the
businesses who want to become mobile virtual network operators are operating in
(e.g. retailers). Additionally, one thing that should be mentioned is the
positives that the mobile virtual
network operators can offer to the network providers which are hosting them
along with
the right time to enter the MVNO market, because there aren’t few the failed
attempts
as we check the historical data. By focusing on the European market we will
observe a gradual increase in the market shares of mobile virtual network
operators, both in profits and subscribers’ percentages. Such examples are
countries like Germany, Italy, United
Kingdom and France where an analytic presentation will follow. Exception to the
rule is
Greece, where mobile virtual network operators have not developed to the extent
that
one would expect.
The LTE architecture is spreading widely in recent years, by network providers
around the world, thus enabling MVNOs to develop new products and services.
Moreover it solves several problems of existing infrastructure, offering
additional
degrees of freedom and development in mobile virtual network operators.
Finally, a case study of Full MVNO with LTE architecture in Greece is
presented.
