Summary:
This thesis focuses on subjects concerning quantum dot lasers and their
applications in
telecommunication and biomedical. The subjects’ presentation has been made in a
simple and comprehensible way without any mathematical technicalities or sterile
physics terminology. The form of the text follows a bottom – up approach,
defining at
first the concepts of semiconductors, quantum dots and lasers upon which the
mode
locked technology is based and then the components needed to develop an
efficient
quantum dot laser. Specifically, the concepts of continuous wave laser, mode
locked
technique, semiconductor optical amplifiers and quantum dot semiconductor
lasers are
introduced. There has been an effort to explain in detail the aforementioned
applications
with the use of examples. Finally, there is a reference to general applications
of
quantum dots without the use of lasers.
