The Work of Diophantus and certain didactical aspects in middle school algebra
Summary:
The first chapter of “Diophantus and Algebra’s instruction” presents strong
aspects and arguments about using history of mathematical meanings on
Mathematics instruction. Historical evolution, analysis and empirical evidence
on mathematical meanings, could prepare us for those items where students face
cognitive difficulties and obstacles.
The second chapter consists of two parts. The first one is historical and
presents “Alexandria by Egypt” as learning center. It also presents Algebra’s
historical evolution from Diophantus to Euler. The second part covers the
transition from the world of arithmetic to the world of school algebra.
In the third chapter we discuss about Diophantus not only as creator of his
work but also as a teacher. We are studying the introductory part of Diophantus
Arithmetica.
In the fourth chapter we describe the realization of classroom teaching
concerning linear equation in the first class of Lyceum Saint Theodorus. For
teaching we used the problem I.1 of “Diophantus Arithmetica”.
Finally in the supplement we propose some problems of “Diophantus Arithmetica”
for teaching linear equations and equations of second grade.
