Mineral Chemistry and Taphonomic Characteristics of Biominerals from the Neogene site of Sahabi, Libya
Summary:
The scope of this thesis is the study of the diagenetic processes that
bioapatite goes through from the time of the burial of an animal's carcass
until its excavation. Our samples belong mainly to artiodactyl mammals from the
site of Sahabi in NE Libya. Our material was studied by means of Scanning
Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
and Moessbauer Spectroscopy. Our results indicate the preservation of the
inorganic part of bone as carbonated fluorapatite. At the same time, carbonates
substitute for phosphates and hydroxyls. The main secondary phases identified
are quartz, gypsum and calcite.
