Summary:
The Type 2 Diabetes(Dt2) is an illness caused by multiple factors. Nutrition
influences not only the appearance, but also the severeness of diabetes.
Health promotion programs for patients with Diabetes are intended to focus on
the appropriate diet. In many studies, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) for
the adoption of a healthy way of eating for patients with Dt2 was applied.
The aim of the present study is the improvement of the eating habits of the
patients with Dt2 as well as the investigation of the relation between the
stage of change in behavior of TTM model and the improvement of the eating
habits. Individual objectives are the shifting to the next stages of change in
behavior of TTM model, the enhancement of advantages for the change in behavior
and the reinforcement of the processes that strengthen this change in
behavior.
In the study patients with Dt2 took part. They were randomly separated in 2
groups, a control group and an intervention group. The control group was only
given printed material while the intervention group went through counseling
with the method of motivational interviewing and was given printed material as
well. A month later, the intervention group also went through a telephone
interview. The present study took place in the diabetic surgery of Kalyvia
Medical Center and 40 patients with Dt2 took part.
The results of the study showed improvement of various eating habits for the
intervention group comparatively with the control group. Also, the intervention
group displayed shifting to the next stage of change in behavior at a
statistically important degree. No correlation of the improvement of the eating
habits and the shifting to the next stage of change in behavior was observed.
Moreover, while there was an important increase of the factors in favour of the
change, there was an important decrease of the factors against the change in
behavior. Finally, the processes related with the change of behavior were
improved considerably.
Health Promotion Programs are necessary to take place so that eating habits,
related with many contemporary illnesses are improved. Various actions should
also be taken to maintain health of populations at an efficient level, avoiding
factors that can lead to unpleasant situations.
