Summary:
Introduction: The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an incurable disease that can be prevented and is characterized by chronic limitation of air flow that is not fully reversible.
Aim: The aim of this study was to review the literature for the investigation of mental disorders in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Methodology: A thorough review of the literature in Greek and international databases was done. All articles that were written in Greek and English language were included.
Results: The physical signs and symptoms and functional limitations that characterize COPD can affect all aspects of the daily life of people and often result in changes in the role of patients and social isolation, while most times they are commonly associated with affective disorders. The symptoms of COPD are often unpredictable and this by itself can contribute to feelings of fear and anxiety. Patients with COPD have higher prevalence of mental health disorders than the general population. Women with COPD are 1.5 times more likely to have a clinical anxiety disorder than men. The most common mental disorders seen in these patients is depression and anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder (with and without agoraphobia), specific phobia, social phobia, physical phobia and psychotism.
Conclusion: Due to the increased prevalence of mental disorders observed in patients with COPD, it is necessary a careful consideration of these people and implement psychological interventions where necessary, so to reduce the depression levels and reducing levels of various anxiety disorders. The psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy and other minimum psychological interventions require further research with well-designed studies before they officially be included in the guidelines of COPD or in the clinical care of patients, in order to investigate their efficacy in these patients.
