Summary:
The therapeutic process and its completion are important factors in the addiction treatment of adolescent and young adult drug users. In Greece, almost 4 out of 10 adolescents drop-out with their own will from addiction treatment programmes, such as adolescent and young adult outpatient treatment programmes. An important indicator of treatment completion is their degree of adherence during the therapeutic process.
AIM OF THE STUDY The present study focuses on studying the protective and dysfunctional factors that are probably related to adherence to therapy of adolescent and young adult cannabis users.
PARTICIPANTS-METHOD Fifty young members of the therapeutic unit for adolescents and young adults “ATRAPOS”, mean age 20 years, and their therapists (7 therapists, mean age 43,3) participated in this study. The Dysfunctional Preconceptions Questionnaire (DPQ) was used for the assessment of cognitive schemata, the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) for the assessment of psychopathology and Treatment Demand Indicator (TDI) for demographic and other related to drug factors such as time following the therapeutic programme, age of onset of drug use, use of other substances, living conditions, family condition of parents. A scale was also used for the assessment of adherence to therapy from the participants, as it was assessed by their therapists. This scale was created by the researcher for the purposes of this study and included the degree of adherence: a) to urine tests b) to “dry” without the use of any drugs therapy c) to individual psychotherapy sessions d) to group therapy sessions or other activities of the programme e) of the family members (the father’s and the mother’s). It was subjected to content validity and internal consistency, reliability (cronbach’s-a).
FINDINGS-CONCLUSIONS The main findings of the study showed that the greater the adherence to therapy the less the depressive symptoms. Mother’s participation in therapy was significantly greater compared to father’s. Furthermore participants who consumed alcohol had a higher degree of dysfunctional cognitive schemata in all three dimensions of the DPQ, namely, that of identity, adjustment and creativity compared to those who didn’t consume alcohol. Recently, research focuses on dysfunctional cognitive schemata in drug addiction due to their clinical importance in the therapeutic process. There is, though, little knowledge on the dysfunctional and protective cognitive schemata which are probably related to adherence to therapy. Research on vulnerability factors and the strengthening of those that play a protective role during therapy in an organized rehabilitation unit will provide knowledge for improving therapy and enhancing the psychological well-being of young drug users.
