The post-war terrorism on cinema: the cases of Italy, Germany and Northern Ireland
Summary:
My thesis is titled "The post-war terrorism on cinema: the cases of Italy, Germany and Northern Ireland”. The main question which arises in the thesis is whether and how the movie is able to serve as a reliable source of history for the reconstruction of our knowledge of the past. This question will be answered by placing in the center of the research the phenomenon of terrorism and the way it was reflected in cinema, notably by examining the cases of Germany, Italy and Britain / Ireland during the decades of ‘60s and ‘70s, when the phenomenon of terrorism was taking on ever greater dimensions. For that reason the thesis will be structured in line with two axes. The first axis refers to the connection of history with the film while the second one addresses the issue of terrorism. More specifically, the analysis will argue for the difficulties that the filmmaker confronts in an attempt to capture the historic events with the greatest precision as possible and in the second part it will focus on the factors that led to the flourishing of terrorism in these three countries as well as the differences that existed among them. The key object of the study is the movies that were met with success, which were filmed in these countries and have as their main theme the issue of terrorism. However, the time overlapping of the film production with the actual facts that it narrates was not necessary for the selection of the films.
To this extent, the introduction of the thesis places the basic question with which the present study is concerned, that is whether the movie is able to provide historical evidence on the phenomenon of terrorism. Also it illustrates the theoretical tools and methodology that are applied in order to examine the question posed by the study.
The first chapter deals with the phenomenon of terrorism in Germany and the political climate prevailing in German society after the operation in Mogadishu as depicted by the German cinema.
The second chapter discusses terrorism in Great Britain / Ireland and its connection with the Irish question through the eyes of British and Irish filmmakers.
The third chapter examines the case of terrorism in Italy as presented by the Italian cinema. The main incident that dominated the Italian cinema of that period was the kidnapping of Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades.
In the last part of the study, the conclusions drawn from the examination of the phenomenon of terrorism and its representation in cinema are included.
