Gardens and sacred groves in Greece from archaic till hellenistic period
Summary:
The main case of this study is to provide as much as possible extended information and stimuli for a comprehensive approach to ancient Greek garden and restore its image in a time frame that a great part of the research community still ignores.
The concept of the garden is so old that coincided with the advent of civilization. The garden in ancient Greece was a creation that aspired to integrate spatially, natural clusters within the city framework. In the majority of gardens is observed the constant attempt to capture its essence and final appearance partially through meticulous planning but also by ensuring the presence of natural elements. Gardens are places that alternate partially due to their fragile context and their ephemeral character, but at the same time the layout is subjected to specific spatial rules.
Currently, there is no known complete description or even an attempted representation of how was the exact final formation of an ancient Greek garden and only a limited part of the information derive from well established archaeological survey and excavation data. Due to these deficiencies the investigation necessarily focuses on gathering the dispersed and varied references and depictions, to create a complete and an -as possible it can be under the circumstances- accurate plan of the gardens most common final design.
The first chapter focuses in ancient written sources and the surviving epigraphic evidence from which we derive information on the existence and morphology of urban gardens and sacred groves. Among the listed important sources are Homeric poems, which lead us to some conclusions that help us form an indicative typology. A brief reference is made to the philosophical context within which the human interaction with nature is defined, in an attempt to understand the reasons that lead people to construct natural landscapes, such as gardens, in their immediate environment and lastly are mentioned Theophrastus scripts considering that he was the first botanist and at the same time, the most complete source of information on the species and most preferred common methods of cultivation in ancient Greece.
Additionally, are referred the various methods of planting, the techniques that were used to alternate the shape of plants, but also all these individual elements that constituted an ancient Greek garden.
The main topic of the second chapter is urban gardens. Mainly is emphasized the city of Athens without of course omitting to refer in other cities of Greek mainland but also important island regions. Furthermore are studied the Hellenistic palaces of Macedonia where the existence of large gardens in central peristyle courtyards of the complexes is assumed.
In the third chapter are examined the sacred properties, gardens and groves, which belonged to temples. This distinction between urban and sacred gardens, attempts to lead in a comprehensive and understanding in depth the ideological context and identity of the garden in the ancient Greece during the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods. Finally, through the distinction between sacred gardens and groves is pursued, the inference of an indicative typology and a partly qualitative approach of the characteristics that occurred between these similar, based on their identity, spaces.
