High school students' representations of the concept of nation: contents, structure and functions
Summary:
In accordance to the contemporary theoretical reflection on students' historical thinking, the purpose of this study is to collect, interpret and analyze students' social representations of the concept of nation. For this purpose, a qualitative research was conducted using the technique of individual semi- structured interviews on a sample of seven senior high school students. Through the interpretive analysis of students' discourse, we found three categories of social representation of the nation: "nation- biological and genealogical descent", "nation- conscience of belonging together" and "nation- sociopolitical subject". Students' representations differ from each other in terms of their specific contents, their particular structure and their cognitive functions. The findings of this study suggest that history education should aim at students' proactive construction of the concept of nation and at teaching the concept's historicity.
