Summary:
Through this research an attempt, both on a theoretical and empirical level, is made to indicate the connection between soap operas and Cultural Studies. In order to plan and substantiate the research study, the concept of the soap opera television genre was bibliographically explored parallel to the goals and methodology of reception in the field of Cultural Studies. Utilizing and combining the bibliographical data, an audience research was conducted on eight viewers. More specifically, a further approach of the appointment of meaning by the subjects while viewing Turkish soap operas is attempted. The plan, implementation and the results of this research are analytically presented in this study which is one of the first structured attempts at understanding and interpreting the soap opera text type through its Greek television viewers.
