The subject of this dissertation is the referendum held on July 5th, 2015, as presented by the broadcasters: MEGA, ANT1, Alpha, STAR, Skai, ERT1 and the influence exerted by them in shaping public opinion.
The events that followed the announcement up to the actual holding of the referendum, as well as the positions of the Greek and foreign officials, and the developments in the political scene of the country after the referendum result, are briefly presented.
The present dissertation also studies the role of television media, as far as the objectivity and impartiality of the information provided by the news broadcasts is concerned, and how they affect the opinion of viewers especially on critical events for the country.
The role of the media, particularly the television media, has changed in recent years as a result not only of the economic crisis but also of the internet which is increasingly becoming part of our lives. Due to the fact that people have greater access to information, the influence exerted on them by the media has been reduced.
The results of the study showed that even though the broadcasters took a clear stand in favor of "Yes" to the referendum question, which led the Journalists' Union to dismiss many journalists or impose penalties on others, they actually failed to convince the television audience and thus "No" prevailed with 61%.
