Branch banking remains the most important and valued method of conducting a wide variety of banking transactions, both within Greece and abroad. However, the rapid development of technology, followed by the proliferation of smart phones and latterly tablets, has began to influence the way in which banking services are provided to the end user. In fact, as mobile banking technology is gaining ground, consumers consider mobile banking to be one of the most important reasons for them to switch between banks.

The objective of this thesis is to highlight the importance of the usability evaluation of mobile banking applications, in order to meet modern banking requirements. The significance of usability evaluation of mobile apps is being demonstrated via an extensive literature review, coupled by the evaluation of the Alpha Bank Mobile Banking application.

In particular, information on the adoption of mobile banking and the dominant mobile banking trends is provided, both within Greece and abroad, followed by an analysis of the main features and benefits of usability and human-centered design. Also, the role and importance of usability and its elements is being highlighted when integrated into the design of mobile interfaces. Finally, the key dimensions and metrics of usability evaluation, as well as the main usability evaluation methods, are being discussed.

Two methods were employed for the usability evaluation of the Alpha Bank Mobile Banking application: heuristics evaluation by designated usability experts and an online questionnaire filled in by typical users of the application. The evaluation process revealed a number of usability problems. Suggestions were made, where possible, for those issues to be resolved, in order to improve the usability level of the application.
