Summary:
Leopold Kozeluch played an important role in the composers' society of Vienna in the classical period being employed not only as a composer but also as a music publisher. This thesis outlines his compositional practice through the analysis of two first and two final symphonic movements, which are all formed in sonata form. The way Κozeluch uses and applies this particular morphological style is examined and compared to the opinions of music theorists of his time (Koch, Galeazzi) as well as modern ones (Hepokosky & Darcy, Caplin). Furthermore, the smaller formes and instrumentation methods in use are being identified. Finally, conclusions regarding the use of harmonic and motivic material are being drawn through the comparison between movements as well as the comparison with the wider composing practice of the second half of 18th century.
