Summary:
The aim of this study was to determine whether physical activity during the past five years could affect later mammographic breast density of postmenopausal women. Subjects were 62 healthy postmenopausal women divided into two groups according to the answers given during an interview. They gave full lifetime medical history in which they did not report any risk factors for breast cancer. Modifiable activity questionnaire by Kriska et al., (1997) was used to determine chronic physical activity, adaptated in the Greek language according to the guidelines given by Beaton, et al. (2000). They recalled the type, duration and frequency of different leisure time physical activities during the past five years and the metabolic equivalents (MET) were calculated (Kriska et al., 1997). They were divided in two groups: exercisers reporting ≥ 6 ΜΕΤ-hr/wk and non-exercisers reporting< 3 ΜΕΤ-hr/wk. We calculated their BMI and performed mammograms to the participants. Two experienced radiologists evaluated mammograms according to the Tabar and BIRADS classifications and given the BIRADS score independently. Statistical analyses used was independent samples t test. Physical activity was not associated to mammographic density according to Tabar mammographic categories. However, we observed a statistically significant decline in mammographic dense area in the exercisers group (p < 0,05 ) using the BIRADS classification method. BIRADS score showed bening imaging of the breast in 77,4% of the women and reported one breast cancer case (1,6%) meeting general population scores (Tumino, et al., 2003). Mammographic dense area estimated according to the BIRADS classification seems to be lower in postmenopausal women who report intense and continuous leisure-time activity during the past five years. Given the fact that few studies have investigated mammographic changes following exercise, we could say that demonstration of beneficial changes in mammographic density associated with increased physical activity levels could be used to motivate women to be more physically active. Increased physical activity among postmenopausal women may be an intervention to reduce mammographic density, influencing their breast cancer risk.
