Ευρωπαϊκή Ολοκλήρωση, οικονομική ανάπτυξη και εθνική ισχύς: η περίπτωση της Ελλάδας

The interdependencies that determine primarily the economic prosperity and ultimately the national subsistence of a state in the modern world, require a higher degree of cooperation between states, in order for them to be able to counteract the challenging of their sovereignty by other supranational and sub national actors. The nation states that formed the EEC, through their cooperation, sought to enhance their national power, in exchange for the transfer of certain competences to the supranational EU institutions. The means chosen were primarily economic, while no high policy issues were raised.

The EU member states, acquired considerable soft power projection capacity to third parties, in terms of mainly economic strength, while offering the prospect of stability and prosperity. Greece was not able to capitalize the economic development opportunities that were available during its 30 years participation in the EU. The growth experienced in the Greek economy proved largely ephemeral and vulnerable, because of the country's inherent structural and socio-economic characteristics. Therefore finally it was forced to a decline in its national power, at first directly due to the economic shock she incurred and secondarily due to the side effects of the turmoil, the unemployment and the decay of the sociopolitical cohesion of the country.
