Summary:
The present work studies the relation between music and mathematics, concerning its interdisciplinary linkage at primary school. In particular, the theory of the ancient greek music is used, especially the musical intervals and the structural ways of the tetrachords, as they are structured in maths as ratios of whole numbers. The original source, on which this work is based, is the work Harmonics by Claudio Ptolemy (2nd c. AD). An original computer software called e_ΕΛΙΚΩΝ has been developed for the purposes of this work, which functions as a digital musical instrument and produces ancient greek music scales. The e_ΕΛΙΚΩΝ was developed in the programming environment MAX/MSP. At the end of the work a complete lesson plan is proposed, which includes the interdisciplinary linkage between music and mathematics through ten worksheets and it is based on the e_ΕΛΙΚΩΝ. The goal is for the children to enhance their understanding of the above-mentioned musical and mathematical notions. The lesson plan is for Year 6 primary school students and it takes three teaching hours.
