Summary:
The present PhD thesis describes and analyses the strategy of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) during the 1990s and the 2000s in reference to its coalition politics and the models of political mobilization it developed. The basic argument is that during this period the KKE developed two distinct models of political mobilization – one ‘labour-unionist’ and one ‘anti-imperialist’ that corresponded to two distinct coalition logics – a narrow one and an open one. From 1996 to 2002 these two models of political mobilization are coexisting through KKE’s political practice and gradually from to 2002 and afterwards the ‘labour-unionist’ model prevails over the ‘anti-imperialist’. Thus the ‘narrow’ logic of political and social coalitions prevails over the relatively ‘open’ one. The strategy of the party is studied through an extensive analysis of party documents and the party’s official newspaper (‘Rizospastis’) from 1992 to 2005.
