Evaluation of language and motor features of children with familial mild mental retardation, aged 6-9 years old.
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate quantitatively and qualitatively the motor and language features of 17 children (n=17) with familial mild mental retardation (IQ  70 - 50-55), aged 6 to 9 years old, to correlate and explain the findings with the use of the neuropsychological model of learning and to explore to some point whether the motor and language features of the sample follow a typical path of development or whether there exist qualitatives differences in the cognitive procudures of children with mild mental retardation, even when they equals to the mental age with typical developing children. Mild mental retardation was diagnosed at public health services. For the language and speech assesment were used: 1. The Preschool Language Scale-3 (UK, 1997), 2. The Expressive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test- Revised Test (1990), 3. The Test of Phonetic and Phonological Development of Greek Language (1995), 4. The pictures of the Ten Picture Action Test (1988), in order to be elicit a small sample of speech, for the calculation of Mean Length of Utterance and analysis of the sample in the three levels of language (use, content, form). Prior was carried out study, for the validity of the Preschool language scale-3 (UK, 1997) and the Expressive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test -Revised, (1990) in the Greek language. Both tests are valid for the Greek language. For the motor assesment were used 1. The Test of Gross Motor Development (1985) and 2. The subtest of fine motor skills of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (1978). The results showed that children with familial mild mental retardation, aged 6-9 years old, have language skills that equals to 3-6 years of typical developing children. Also, they showed a significant motor delay that equals to ½ to 2½ years in relation to their chronological age. The motor and language deficits can be explained with the neuropsychological model of learning, while the motor and language features of this sample seems to follow a typical path of development. This study proves the significance of early preschool language and motor skills in the development of academic knowledge (reading, writting, mathematics) and to the development of everyday life skills.
