Religion and organ donation
Summary:
Introduction: Nurses play an important role both in identifying potential organ and tissue donors and in approaching the families of potential donors for their consensus.
Purpose: The aim of the present study was to describe the attitude of the nursing staff towards the process of organ donation, investigating the relationship between religiosity and the nurses’ intention to become organ donors.
Methods: The study sample consists of 117 nurses who work in 11 different departments of hospitals located in Attica .A special questionnaire was used for data collection the index Cronbach'salpha was calculated for the reliability of the scale and reliability halves shown (split-half reliability). A factor analysis (common factor analysis) was performed to construct validity of the scale . Statistical analysis was done by using the SPSS software for Windows, version 21.0.
Results: 97 ( 82.9 % )out of 117 nurses were female and 20 (17.1 % ) were male with an average age of 40.4 for both of them .There was no statistically significant difference in gender and intention regarding the donation, but it was found a statistically significant difference regarding their knowledge and the department of the hospital in which they serve. Regarding the validity and reliability of this survey, the questionnaire can be used in Greece as it provides good psychometric properties.
Conclusions: The survey showed that the nurses’ knowledge about organ donation, the hospital department in which they serve and the fact that they have met a brain dead or an alive organ donor is factors associated with their decision to become an organ donor.
