Summary:
The main objective of the present thesis is to survey and discuss the perspectives of the Byzantine people on aesthetics of public and private spaces and vistas during the Early Byzantine period, as they arise from Julian of Ascalon’s treatise, a 6th century architect. Byzantines' views about the natural environment and specifically their interest in the beauty of natural spaces and town aesthetics is revealed through a critical approach of Julian of Ascalon’s building regulations. Furthermore the present thesis reveals Byzantines’ interest for privacy protection in the context of peaceful coexistence with their neighbors, which is evidently related to the high quality of life within the Byzantine society during this period. Therefore, the collection of Julian of Ascalon’s building regulations contributes significantly to our understanding of the daily life of homo byzantinus in Palestine and probably the surrounding Middle Eastern area. As Julian of Ascalon tries to combine previous legislation with customary law, the starting point of this research may be placed in Late Antiquity, since this period's legislation influenced, and most likely served as the source of, his work. This thesis was not solely based on Julian of Ascalon’s building regulations but also on other primary and secondary historical sources that provided further valuable material for further research.
