From the language disorders to the language acquisition: comparative study of modification requests among a group of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and a group of children learning greek as a foreign language
Summary:
This research project, concerning the question of politeness, aims at finding common places of discrepancy between children with ASD [N:10] and children that study greek as a foreign language [N:14]. In order to handle the subject of politeness, samples of requests -not only from the test groups but also from the control group [natural speakers of greek with no neuropsychiatric pathology]- were received, through a Written Discourse Completion Test. Based on both the model of Blum-Kulka (1989) and the Brown & Levinson's theories of politeness (1987), we applied not only quantitative, but also qualitative methods, with the help of the SPSS program and the Critical Discourse Analysis. As far as the use of positive strategies are concerned, common sites have been identified among the research teams, in the context of a social distance between the interlocutors, as well as in the choice of the interlocutor's perspective. Compared to those of the control group, the results were statistically significant, as variations. As a differentiating criterion the age was also partially accepted. However, in order for the observed trends to be used in teaching as motivations and to reassess, furthermore, the term of ‘normality’, more research is required.
