The geopolitical value of Southeastern Europe in the classical and contemporary geopolitical theories. A comparative analysis and critical review.

Summary:
Over the last 3 centuries, Southeastern Europe has invariably been the focal point of an intense geopolitical power struggle among great powers. In a substantial body of literature the region has been depicted as being caught in a vortex of rivalry for influence and the creation of submissive states. Tsar’s Nicholas I phrase "Sick Man of Europe" commonly refers to the Ottoman Empire, because it was increasingly falling under the financial control of European powers and had lost territory in a series of disastrous wars. The disintegration of the Empire was a slow and painful process during which great powers tried to secure for themselves the lion’s share, while smaller powers tried to gain small profits to secure their everyday living.
The disintegration of the Ottoman Empire combined with other century long characteristics of the region, created a geopolitical phantasmagoria, a place where all geopolitical theories could be tested and proved wrong or right. Successive wars, local and World Wars, conflicts, revolutions and mixed populations, produced a map upon which every line, even randomly drawn by a baby, could have a geopolitical meaning.
This thesis is an attempt to put these randomly drawn lines in order and find out if every line was drawn by the same hand or not. To detect if the hands were holding the pencils tightly or not and ascertain if the ink used is indelible or not.
