Henrik Ibsen's "Ghosts". Philosophical and Psychoanalytical Approaches
Summary:
The goal of this thesis is to perform an analysis of Ibsen's Ghosts and to investigate possible links with 19th century philosophy and psychoanalysis. First, we are trying to familiarize the readers with the main characteristics of Ibsen's writing and to look into the topics that re-occur in his works. Early fragments of modern existentialism, the absurdity of human existence, the feelings of terror and awe that individuals experience while facing the inevitability of death, the will to live (or the absence of it), the notion of an end or the concept of an eternal return and other thematics with profound philosophical extensions are incorporated in the thoughts and the actions of Ibsen's characters. In this thesis, we are looking into such thematics, through the lens of Nietzsche's, Kierkegaard's, and Schopenahauer's philosophical work. Furthermore, we are trying to form a psychoanalytical approach to the main topics of Ibsen's Ghosts, while examining the relationship between the protagonist (Oswald) and his absent -yet always present – father. With that in mind, we turn to the psychoanalytical work of Jacques Lacan and his concept of noms-du-père, as well as the works of Sigmund Freud concerning the relationship between father and son, mother and son, and the Oedipus complex. At the final chapter, while reaching some conclusions, we introduce some potential links between Ibsen's Ghosts and the modern Scandinavian arts (mostly cinema), in order to give room to further future analysis.
