Interpretative strategy and designing of the main display, of the new museum, in the historic house owned by Antonopoulou family, in Dimitsana village, located in New Gortinia, Peloponnesus.
Summary:
This study examines the interpretative strategy and the designing of the main display, of the new museum in Dimitsana village, located in New Gortinia, Peloponnesus.
The key facts of the project are:
• The new museum is going to be hosted in a historic house, owned by a very important family, lived in a crucial period of Greece’s recent history, in Dimitsana.
• The available collection is a combination of 388 objects, of poor aesthetic value, having various applications, and made of a range of materials. Most importantly, these objects are totally disconnected from their human stories.
• Dimitsana is a place rich in oral history, which is crucial to be collected and researched and further on exhibited to the public, before its extinction.
The designing of the exhibition and the museum interpretative strategy combined:
• The use of the historic house as a social-historical archive of past life in Dimitsana. Therefore, the private realm of a house is used as geographical and cultural milieu , reflecting the political and social aspirations of the society at large.
• The interpretive challenge was to use the emptiness the room, where the historic event took place, to stimulate the visitor’s imagination, to evoke the atmosphere of the true events that took place in it. The (advantage) qualities of being leaved, stimulating the imagination, travelling in time and space, together with the emotional and spiritual involvement of the visitor, are elements that a historic house museum incorporates. These elements are fundamental for the interpretive design of the exhibition in this room.
• The biography of the house serves to interpret the family’s political, social and cultural aspirations and achievements, as well as their role to the dramatic events that stimulated Greece’s recent history.
• The oral history is used as an interpretative methodological tool, not only for the designing of the main exhibition, but also for the interpretative strategy of the museum as a whole. Therefore, an online oral history database has been used for the interpretative and communication strategy of the new museum.
The new museum is designed to function as a social-historical museum. It is a documentary historic house museum , commemorating the family leaved in it and the historic events that took place in each room and at the same time as a representative site , portraying the social, political, historic and cultural framework in Dimitsana’s past.
