Olympic Games of Athens 2004 and Photo Presentation in the Daily Press.
Summary:
The subject of the research was the association of the Olympic Games and the Media with a focal point the photographic coverage by the Greek Press. Through this research we were given the opportunity to realize a review of this time according to the way the Greek press recorded developed and presented to their wide readership. The main interest for the research was the perspective of journalistic coverage as well as the themes that emerged during the commission of these Games. The use of visual material from the Press in relation to themes of civil, athletic, society and economic nature are parameters that shaped key and critical questions. Questions asked to reply are: How the Press developed the picture. What issues revealed and presented through this. The timing reflects the photographs. The message sought to enter the public. Whether the use of images contributed to the proper promotion of the meaning of the Games.
Method.
The whole research project was based on a critical view of the phenomena revealed through the Athens Olympic Games. The method used is called ethnographic content analysis. The objective of the method chosen was to gather, codify, describe and interpret photographs of the first pages of the Greek printed press of that time.
Results.
The 81 photographs of athletes, where apart from 3, all the other portray efforts and moments of exclusively Greek athletes, it reveals the expectation of the Greek press for discrimination. The 56 photographs from successes of Greek athletes, the 10 from the ceremonies, and the 6 from the archaeological spaces, shows the intention of Press to communicate the sentiment of national pride and the reinforcement of national prestige. At the same time it reveals his effort for culture of sense that the Games bring intensely the marks of Greek element, are achieved and that in this success helpers and partakers were all the citizens of Country. The three photographs of Pan-Hellenic examinations show the adherence of Press about the actual issues. With regard to in the 66 photographs affair to doping, these show the size of disappointment, the degree of distress other and the levels of sentimental bond that exist between a entire population with his Olympic champions. Still they reveal the expediency that composes a Olympic organisation, concerning the construction of transitory moments of happiness, national excitement and aimed political briefing.
Conclusion
The propaganda behaviour of Press in the direction of configuration a visual media reality, aiming at the service of political expediency, deprived from the reading public of Country the possibility for convenient and overall briefing concerning the 28th Olympic Games. Press, wasted his chance for appointment of institution of Olympic Games, and phenomena that them accompany to profit unnecessary other and at the same time aimed Olympic ethnocentrism. An ethnocentrism that was thirsty for discrimination, projection and glory sacrificing that more precious a Country allocates, her new athletes.
