The social media as informative mean in Greece_Case study: Brexit
Summary:
The globalization, as a phenomenon of multifaceted processes, has influenced all the aspects of social, political and economic life, including the information and communication field. The growth of social media, through the interaction and the constant flow of information, contributes to the further transformation of media. For the preparation of this work on "social media as a source of information" with a case study of Brexit, a quantitative research was conducted to investigate the parameters determining the selection of social media as an information source. The survey was conducted by setting the following research objectives: (a) the identification of interdependencies and correlations of demographic variables, as the gender and the educational level, with the parameters relating to the search for information through online social networking sites, (b) to investigate the parameters of the information mode of social media Greek users, on the referendum on the exit of Britain from the EU and on the outcome of this referendum, and (c) to investigate whether the information from social media related to the increase of social capital and the political participation of Greek citizens. The results show that the parameters relating to the search for information through online social networking sites are correlated with the demographic variables of gender and educational. Furthermore social media contribute to the process of creation and further development of social capital. Finally, the degree of political participation of Greek social media users, is related to the protest to the traditional media and the ability to mobilize other users on a topical political theme.
