The expression of manner in Modern Greek Language (Language-teaching approach with emphasis on primary education school textbooks)
Summary:
The examination of the expressions that denote manner (in the broad sense of the term) and function as adjuncts is in the centre of this study. Therefore, we followed a functional and semantic model of analysis for the discrimination and classification of the expressions of manner. Furthermore, based on the speaker’s different communication needs we focused on the use of diverse linguistic means through which the manner can be expressed (adverbs and adverbial phrases, noun phrases, prepositional and participial phrases, subordinate clauses).
The semantic category of manner is broad and includes various dimensions / meanings which relate to each other but do not coincide and, in general, they answer the interrogative how?. All these meanings belong to a unified category for which the term ‘process’ was adopted. ‘Manner’, ‘means’ and ‘instrument’ are the three main dimensions of process. ‘Manner’ includes the individual dimensions of ‘‘proper’ manner’ –the broadest and the most typical semantic subcategory of process– of ‘comparison - similarity’ and of ‘accompaniment’, which can have the characteristic [± concrete].
Emphasis was also given on the study of the primary school language books (both those that are taught to the students today and the previous handbooks in the series My language, as well as the reference books) as concerns how they deal with manner, in its broad sense (as process). The comparison of old and new language textbooks showed that there were no substantial differences between them. In particular, apart from manner, in a big part of the exercises other dimensions of process occur such as means, accompaniment, accompanying circumstances and instrument (in one or two cases). These dimensions however are mentioned neither in the student’s nor in the teacher’s books. Indeed, these meanings are covered by the meaning of manner, too. It should also be noted that among the exercises which are related to process a large proportion occupies the dimension of comparison - similarity (simile).
