Forming young researchers: Exploring and understanding of geosciences at museums’ laboratories as a form of informal education
Summary:
This masters’ thesis is the imprint of a research fulfilled during the academic year 2016-2017 by the Department of Sciences of the Faculty of Primary Education of Athens University.
Subject of study of this research is the development of an informal education programme with the purpose of acquaintance of primary school pupils with the concepts of Geosciences, such as Geological time, fossils and rocks.
This research was conducted on 44 pupils of the sixth grade of three primary schools in the area of Attica. In order to formulate this informal education, programme activities and educational material were developed with the use of simple materials and structures. With the aim to control the level of success of this intervention and corresponding conclusions, two same knowledge content questionnaires were developed and used before and after the intervention. Furthermore, an application questionnaire was also developed, to be filled in by the pupils, upon completion of this intervention.
Following the conduct of this research one of the conclusions reached is the improvement of pupils’ answers to the questions of the posttest compared to those of the pretest. The statistical analysis showed that this improvement is statistically significant. However from the analysis of the questionnaires relating to the applications, it follows that pupils face some difficulties in applying new knowledge.
