HANDEDNESS AND STUTTERING. META-ANALYSIS
Summary:
Stuttering is defined as a disorder that affects speech fluency and is characterized by interruptions in the production of the speech sounds. Even though it affects individuals throughout their lives, the causes are not clear. The relationship between handedness and stuttering has stimulated scientific interest as it can provide some evidence with regards to its aetiology. The purpose of this research is to investigate, through meta-analyses of published and unpublished studies the relationship betwee handedness and stuttering. Thirty studies totaling 13,407 participants (2,823 individuals with stuttering (IS) and 10,584 typically developing individuals (TID)) were included in a series of four sets of meta-analyses, specifically (i) meta-analyses of studies comparing IS and TDI on handedness, (ii) meta-analyses of studies examining the handedness prevalence in IS, (iii) meta-analyses of studies examining the degree of handedness in IS compared to TDI only in participants with right-handedness (iv) meta-analyses of studies examining the degree of handedness in IS compared to TDI. The findings in the first set of meta-analyses, increased rates of atypical handedness in people with stuttering compared to the general population. In the second set of meta-analyses the prevalence of left-handedness in people with stuttering was estimated at 12.2%. The third set of meta-analyses did not find statistically significant differences, while in the fourth set a lower degree of dominance was found in IS compared to the TDI. Overall, the present study provides a reliable and robust test of the hypothesis that IS do differ in terms of direction and degree of handedness compared to TDI. Of course, the absolute value of this difference is small.
