Summary:
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the way in which decisions are made within a school unit, whether the due importance to the collective bodies of a school is given or not, and what the role of a school principal is in the whole procedure.
The half-term interview method was used for the survey of this thesis. The sample of the survey consisted of 30 teachers and more specifically 10 school unit principals and 2 members from the Teachers’ Board of each of these schools.
The research is divided into four thematic sections. The first one aims at highlighting not only all the procedures followed while having a Teachers’ Board meeting but also the issues discussed in it , and, moreover, describing exactly the decision-making process followed at schools.
The second part of the interview focuses on the role of the school principal during the process mentioned above, and generally his or her role at school. The research shows that the principal’s role is quite decisive for the school effectiveness since today’s principals are multitasking and they are called upon to cope with many roles and responsibilities.
The third thematic section explores the role of teachers and the way they perceive their position at school. It investigates whether or not they are actively involved in school decision making and which factors influence their participation. Also, the interview makes clear their perception of their career development and the importance they give to the school climate and culture.
Finally, the fourth section of the interview explores the way in which collective bodies function and, in particular, the School Board, and who finally makes the decisions about the organization and management of the school unit.
