Assessment of general health and personal beliefs in association with quality of life in patients with chronic renal failure under hemodialysis
Summary:
Introduction: There is considerable evidence that hemodialysis in CRF patients significantly affects their self-reported quality of life (QOL).
Purpose: To investigate the level and correlations between self-reported general health, beliefs about the-world-future-self, the internal or external beliefs about health with quality of life, in a sample of hemodialysis patients.
Material - Methods: 55 patients with CRF undergoing hemodialysis in public Dialysis Unit during the period from 01/06/2016 to 11/30/2016. Data collection was performed using questionnaires: General Health Questionnaire (GHQ- 28), Dysfunctional Preconceptions Questionnaire (DPQ), Health Locus of Control (HLC), WHOQoL-BREF questionnaire, KDQOL-SF ™ - Greek Version, and demographic data.
Results: Of the 55 patients 30 are men and 25 women with a mean age of 49 years. The 58.2% of the patients have been hospitalized at least once and exhibits high comorbidity (50.9%). The malfunction detection rates were ranging from 21.8% (Self-esteem & Social) to 32.7% (Creativity). The internal locus of control for health is one parameter that most affects the beliefs of patients regarding self-world-future. 9.1% evaluate their QOL as poor or very poor and 10.9% indicated not satisfied with their health. A high percentage (76.3%) reported moderate or good health and one in two (52.7%) assessed QoL as good or very good QOL. Data analysis revealed a number of factors affecting self-reported QoL. Somatic symptoms and complications, social and sexual functioning, the psycho-emotional state (anxiety and depression level) and the degree of internal locus of control on health, according to the regression models applied, it appears to be the main determinants of QoL.
Conclusion: QOL of patients with CRF on dialysis is moderate to good enough, depending on the rated dimensions, while in any case is lower than the Greek general population. It appears that different bio-psycho-social factors may affect patients’ evaluations of their QoL
