The contribution of memory and phonological awareness to the production of written speech in first- year children with and without language impairement
Summary:
Children with language impairments have deficits in both oral and written speech. Scientific interest in researching written difficulties, which this particular group of children face, has been increased in recent years. The purpose of the present study is: a) to assess the difficulties regarding the production of written speech in 2nd Grade students with a language impairment compared to their peers whose development is normal, and b) to research the contribution of verbal working memory, verbal short-term memory, and phonological awareness to the process through which this particular student population produces written speech. 30 children with a language impairment and 30 children of normal development participated in this study, and they were assessed through a series of tests which examined the factors mentioned above, while they were also asked to write a narrative text. Statistical methods were used to analyse the collected data. The findings of the study indicate that children with a language impairment performed more poorly in the production of written speech, both verbal working and short-term memory, and phonological awareness compared to the children of normal development. Statistically significant correlations were found between verbal working memory, verbal short-term memory, and phonological awareness and the assessment criteria for the spelling and complexity of the written texts. Statistically significant correlations were also found between phonological awareness and the ability to produce longer written texts with a richer vocabulary. While assessing the various influences and interactions emerged the impact of phonological awareness and verbal shοrt-term memory on the production of written speech. The correlations and influences mentioned appear in different forms and intensity between the two groups.
