Vocational Identity and Work Motivation in Students of the 3rd grade of Senior High School in Greece. A tentative exploration.
Summary:
The present study explored the variables of vocational identity and work motivation in a sample of students who studied in the 3rd grade of senior high school in Greece. Since there was no prior published research upon this issue, the results were evaluated in relation to the particular environmental context, the conditions of socio-economic crisis in Greece and the age of the participants. More specifically, research a) carried out a basic assessment of the psychometric characteristics of the vocational identity scale (VISA) (Porfeli, Bora,Vondracek & Weingoldet, 2011), b) evaluated the level of vocational identity dimensions in students and estimated the relationship among vocational identity and work motivation. The therotical context for vocational identity was VISA model (Porfeli et al.,2011) and for work motivattion was the Self Determinaion Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985a ; Deci, & Ryan, 2000) and the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale-MWMS (Gagné et al., 2014). The psychometric tools were adapted in order be suitable for the sample.
The results showed adequate reliability for the three dimensions of VISA scale while the inter-correlation pattern of VISA subscales followed the pattern proposed by earlier research. On the contrary, sample's average in the three dimensions of vocational identity showed a reverse pattern compared to the previous findings of the international literature. Finally, a significant relationship between vocational identity and work motivation was found, with dimensions of work motivation significantly predicting two of the three dimensions of vocational identity, specifically the career reconsideration and career commitement.
