Impact of Tele-ICU Coverage on Patient Outcomes.A Systematic Review

Aim: the aim of ths review is to indicate the impact of the use of tele-medicine in the ICU on the patients' outcomes.
Data search: an extended research was conducted among the international data bases PUBMED,Web of Science and Google Scholar, plus an additional research among the websites of hospitals and technical complanies. The mesh terms Tele-ICU, remote ICU and virtual ICU were used,encompassing 15 studies and more than 62,858 patients.
Data review and analysis: a systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with published guidelines and included studies that estimated the mortality and the length of stay in the ICU and the hospital before and after the use of Tele-ICU
Results: the data analycis indicated a significant reduction in the mortality and the lenght of stay in the ICU but not in the overall hospital outcomes.
Conclusion: given the significant resources required for the tele-ICU implementation, further evaluation is clearly needed.
