"Incancerated Mothers with Children at Eleonas Women's Detention Store, Thiva: Case Study"
Summary:
The present dissertation focuses on the study of the impact of the detention conditions on the constitution of identity of mothers held in confinement. At the beginning, special emphasis is given on the ways the particular framework as well as the prison regulations under which they are held, shape the detainee’s identity. Then, it is examined whether special consideration is taken in regards to the particularities of the situation that inmates who keep their offspring in prison are faced with.
To achieve the above objectives a qualitative research was carried out in the Women Prison of Elaionas Thivas, using semi-structured interviews with open and closed type questions.
Through qualitative analysis of the interview content of the conducted survey, we can ascertain that, while the living conditions for inmates with children are far better in relation to other detainees, they still have a long way to go to provide a framework of respect for motherhood and children’s rights alike.
