The role of leadership on nurses' turnover intention
Summary:
Introduction:Turnover intention among nursing personnel has been observed to be on the rise worldwide. Research has given us insight into this rather disturbing phenomenon and the main reasons appear to be lack of job satisfaction and burnout, a common psychological phenomenon characterized by a decline in physical, emotional and psychological energy resulting from work related stress.
Purpose: Exploring the crucial role of leadership, workplace empowermentand motivation, while associating them with job satisfaction and burnout.
Material and methods: A review of the literature was carried out on PubMed for the period of 2007 to 2017. Exclusion criteria for articles were non-reference to people, the use of a language other than English, letters to the publisher, articles referring to reviews rather than surveys, articles that did not refer to a population of nurses, did not refer to nurses working in the department of health and the finding that the content of the article did not ultimately concern this issue, as it emerged from reading the summary. Finally, the sample consisted of 12 studies.
Results: Most studies show similar results that designate the role of leadership, which appears to be significantly and positively related to the factors under consideration.
Conclusions: The majority of aforesaid studies agree that leadership, workplace empowerment and motivation are key factors in the well-being and development of working nurses. The strong and positive significance found, makes the fact that the empowerment and leadership that is applied to nursing staff decisively influences the level of job satisfaction while lowering the probability of burnout, evident. As a result, the adaption of effective leadership models becomes paramount as it efficiently solves problems that have long plagued the nursing personnel, while influencing the degree of care quality provided to patients and hence the broader image of the healthcare organization.
