Chronic pancreatitis and metabolic bone diseases
Summary:
The present thesis is a result of an extended review of the latest literature and its aim is to present, as good as possible, the relation between chronic pancreatitis and metabolic bone diseases.
Chronic pancreatitis is the chronic inflammation of the pancreas that can be associated with upper abdominal pain radiating to the back, along with both exocrine and endocrine tissue deficiency. The most common causes of chronic pancreatitis are alcohol and cholelithiasis. Other causes are genetic factors and pancreatitis associated with dietary habits. There is also the idiopathic pancreatitis in which we cannot identify the cause of it, or the patients do not admit the extended use of alcohol.
X-rays, ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance are very important concerning the diagnosis and can reveal distortion of the pancreatic tissue.
The recommended therapy includes the cause elimination (which is usually the extended use of alcohol) and the administration of pancreatic enzymes. The prescription of insulin is imperative when there is endocrine tissue deficiency or distortion.
Both, weight loss (as a result of anorexia caused by the upper abdominal pain and the extended use of alcohol) and pancreatic enzymes deficiency (as a result of exocrine tissue deficiency) can lead to the malabsorption of fat soluble vitamins, minerals and electrolytes and through this, associate this inflammatory condition of pancreas with the existence of low bone mineral density. That’s why, it is of great importance, concerning these patients to proceed in bone mineral density control.
